Integrated Pest Management (IPM)

The artful management of pest populations using systems of complimenting control strategies that will maintain pest populations at levels that can be tolerated by humans in terms of their economy, health and/or general quality of life. Non-chemical approaches such as monitoring, inspection, identification, sanitation, exclusion & mechanical repairs.

Steps in an IPM Program

  • Monitor the pest populations
  • Develop a Pest Management Plan
  • Implement the Pest Management Plan
  • Evaluate the results of the Pest Management Procedures
  • Re-Implement the IPM Plan with the revisions

General IPM Program Methodology

  • Mechanical (sanitation, glue boards, multi-catch rodent stations, light traps, CO2 traps, pheromone traps, etc)
  • Physical (maintenance improvements i.e. lights and repairs to exclude pests)
  • Biological (pathogens)
  • Legal (Gov, State, or City quarantines and inspections)
  • Pesticides (least risk i.e. lowest impact on people and the environment and only when justified)

Benefits of IPM Program

  • Over the long term there will be fewer pests to annoy or threaten the citizens.
  • Fewer pests means a reduction in the potential for pest-borne diseases
  • IPM programs reduce reliance on pesticides
  • Reduction of pollutants (pesticides) in the environment reduces potential effects on people, wildlife, the environment, and future generations
  • Developing and implementing IPM allows the applicator to deliver more effective pest control programs. Each instance is different, but each requires the use of many strategies.
